Village of Hempstead Initiative
The Hagedorn Family Resource Center is a true community center providing services to families who reside in the Village of Hempstead and neighboring communities. The Center assists parents in achieving their personal and family goals through services, information, resources and referrals. It advances the study habits, social and academic performance of elementary, middle and high school children through its educational and out-of-school programs.
Child Care Programs offered at the Center
Nursery Co-op: A short-term childcare and case management program for parents seeking employment, education, training or fulfillment of other needs in pursuit of self-sufficiency.
Education Programs offered at the Center
Afterschool: This New York State licensed program takes place each day after school until 5:45 p.m. The children are picked up daily at local elementary schools, given a nutritious snack and assistance with homework . The program works to establish good academic habits while providing fun and enriching activities to develop self-confidence and other pro-social behaviors.
Parents and Students’ Success Afterschool Program (PASS): This program is fully staffed by volunteers tutoring elementary school-aged children one-on-one in subjects in which they are struggling.
English as a Second Language (ESL): In collaboration with the Hempstead School District’s Adult and Community Education Program, ESL classes are offered five days a week to adults in the community during the operational hours of the Nursery Co-op. Child care is available for the adult participants of the Co-op Nursery who are acquiring English language skills as one of their goals of self-sufficiency.
Hempstead Pre-kindergarten: The Hempstead School District operates its Pre-kindergarten program at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center. Two sessions are offered daily during the school year for 4 year olds.
La Escuelita: La Escuelita, The Little School, opened in the fall of 2006 for pre-kindergarten aged children from homes where Spanish is the primary language. The
children develop school readiness skills including cognitive, social and emotional development. They acquire English while maintaining and developing their native language.
Little Library: A unique space that houses a lending library for 2 to 12 year olds. This Little Library is transforming the lives of children who are inspired to read, research and create a love of reading. View our video.
Other Support Services
AmeriChoice/United Healthcare Medicaid: Family and Children’s Association hosts an enroller from AmeriChoice at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays to assist no/low income families get medical insurance.
Me Gusta (“I Like") is an organization of mothers from within the Hagedorn Family Resource Center who create one of a kind handmade crafts and whose children attend the Co-op Nursery. When you purchase Me Gusta bags or beads, 1/3 of the donation goes to replenishing the materials, 1/3 goes to the craftswoman who made the items, and 1/3 goes back to Me Gusta so it can continue growing. In addition, the Hagedorn Family Resource Center collaborates with other providers to offer pediatric healthcare to the uninsured and low-cost health insurance enrollment to children and families. Additionally, the Center works with other Family and Children’s Association programs and outside agencies to provide meaningful community services and programs on site, while offering bilingual support across the agency.
