Learn to Respond Versus React

Anger is a signal, and one worth listening to. Anger is something we feel. It exists for a reason and always deserves our respect and attention. There are questions about anger that may be helpful to ask:

  • What am I really angry about?
  • What is the problem and whose problem is it?
  • How can I sort out who is responsible for what?
  • How can I learn a way to express my anger that will not leave me feeling helpless and powerless?
  • When I feel angry, how can I clearly communicate my position without becoming defensive or attacking?
  • What risks and losses might I face if I become clearer and more assertive?
  • If getting angry is not working for me, what can I do differently?

The Hicksville Counseling and Resource Center's Anger Management Program addresses these questions and more. Both men and women attend the program once a week for 16 weeks. Groups are conducted by professionals.

Remember: When we vent our anger ineffectively, we can easily become locked into a self-perpetuating, downward cycle of behavior.

  • If our complaints are not clearly voiced, we may elicit other people's disapproval instead of their understanding.
  • This only increases our sense of bitterness and injustice; yet all the while, the actual issue(s) go unidentified.
  • On top of that, we may become a scapegoat – somebody made to take the blame.
